I went to Belize my senior year of undergrad through the International Student Learning Program (ISLP) at the University of Louisville.

While there, we traveled to local schools, ranging from elementary to high school, leading workshops on: applicable engineering, such as filtering water with household objects (assuming coal is a household object); bullying; and professionalism. The children here were by far the sweetest and the concept of bullying was lost on them. Bless their sweet baby hearts.

We also led a vision clinic that offered free vision analysis and glasses to the community.

My trip to the Philippines was also through the International Student Learning Program (ISLP) at the University of Louisville. We were here for 14 days leading workshops on bullying, engineering, and professionalism. The children here were a true delight, and they treated all of us like the Kardashians (in a good way). Their favorite workshop was, by far, engineering--they blew me away with their ingenuity! You've never seen popsicle bridges until you've seen their popsicle bridges.

We also set up a dental clinic, which was clearly a need within the community. I helped pull teeth and suck the blood from mouths while dentists-in-training delivered the numbing medication. Okay fine I didn't pull any teeth but I could have if I wanted to and I sucked up a LOT of blood! When I think of this trip, I think of the dental clinic. Adults and children lined up for hours to get their teeth pulled, and despite tears of fear running down their cheeks, no child ever complained. It was incredible. Truly.

When I told my father I wanted to go to Uganda to build homes for the homeless he a bit of an episode and told me "if you must put your life in danger I have to be there to protect you. We will go on a mission trip through the church." And that was that. To Haiti we went! We led plays for the mentally handicapped orphans on site, as well as on Tortuga island and at nearby orphanages. To be honest, I don't feel like we made much of an impact. Haiti needs a lot more than prayer and good intent.

Nevertheless, it was my first trip abroad and the first time I was exposed to raw poverty, voodoo (pig sacrifices), and guns. Machine guns, everywhere! After Haiti I was determined to travel and see the world's pain. While I've only left the United States twice since then, I remain facinated by the slums of the world. If I can understand it, maybe, just maybe, I'll know how to fix it. That is my dream for my life.

Stay tuned.
